Helpful Tips to Keep Your Child Healthy During the Flu and Cold Season

Once January rolls around it can feel like a non-stop festival of sneezing, sniffling, and coughing. Of course, this is a festival no one wants to attend. Otherwise known as the flu season, children and adults alike are susceptible to getting sick during this dreadful peak of illness that spreads quickly. What can you do as a parent to keep your child protected? There are a couple of key things!

Make sure your child is eating a healthy diet.

Growing bodies need proper nutrition. It’s also important that children receive a good amount of fruits and vegetables to help keep your immune system working. A weak immune system is susceptible to getting sick much faster than a healthy one. You may also want to consider giving your child vitamins that are specifically for children.

Clean and disinfect the house.

Bacteria spreads rapidly! And with a curious child in the house, it can be two-fold. Keeping your home as clean as possible is critical to helping prevent the spread of illness. Make sure to wipe down countertops, scrub toilets, and vacuum or mop. You’ll also want to disinfect your child’s toys and electronics as often as possible or at least once a day.

Teach them the importance of sneezing into the elbow and washing hands.

We’ve all been there. We see someone sneeze or cough into their hands and immediately think “Yuck!” As adults, we know that doing this causes germs to spread more easily. Children should learn the same lesson early on. Demonstrate how to sneeze or cough into your elbow when you’re not able to use a tissue. Also, make sure your child understand why it’s important they respect other’s space when it comes to sneezing and coughing.

Keep them at home if they do become sick.

If the symptoms of the common cold or flu are present such as a fever, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, cough, or congestion, make sure that you keep your child home. Have their condition examined at a family clinic and allow him or her to get plenty of rest.
