doctor examining a male patientIf you work in transportation industry you may think that a DOT exam is an annoying formality. However, it is actually a pretty quick procedure as well as a helpful exam. First and foremost, it is important to remember that the exam is a requirement from the Department of Transportation (DOT). Employers that are designated as safety-sensitive by the DOT require that all personnel take the exam. Safety-sensitive means that the job can impact the safety of employees and the public. The physical is mandated by the Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Knowing all this doesn’t make the exam any less annoying or even nerve wrecking. At El Paso Family & Pediatric Clinic we make the DOT exam easy and quick. We have described here what you can expect during your physical.

What to Expect in a DOT Exam

The purpose of this physical is to ensure that you are fit and in good health to complete the work at hand. First, drivers need to have at least 20/40 vision acuity in each eye without correction. The peripheral vision of each eye is tested as well. The standard is 70” in the horizontal meridian. Hearing is tested as well. Drivers need to be able to hear a “forced whisper” at five feet or less with or without a hearing aid. Essentially, this means an average hearing loss of 40 dB or less is acceptable. The exam also includes a check of the blood pressure and pulse rate as well as a urinalysis. The test will also include an overall physical examination of the body.

What to Take to Your Exam

First, the office will provide a questionnaire for you to fill out. You will also need to bring glasses, hearing aids, or contacts if you use these items. Drivers that have diabetes are required to also bring the lab results of their most recent Hemoglobin A1C (HgAIC) exam. Others that have heart related issues are required to bring labs or a medical history from their cardiologist. It is also important to bring a complete list of current medication.
